AZ Department of Health - SunWise curriculum
Grades  4 - 8
In August 2005, Arizona became the first state to mandate sun safety education and now requires the SunWise program
be taught in all Arizona k-8 public and charter schools.

The program features 60 age-appropriate sun safety
activities that are easily incorporated into the existing curricula. Each activity card provides a learning
objective and discussion points. Activities can be accessed on-line and prior sun safety experience is not
necessary for an educator to successfully and confidently share the SunWise program with students.

Sun safety is important because Arizona ranks No. 2 in the
world in skin cancer incidence rates. (Australia is No. 1). Since about 80 percent of a person’s lifetime
exposure to the sun occurs within the first 18 years, it’s crucial to protect and educate children to reduce
subsequent skin cancer rates in our state.

The program's learning components enable students and
teachers to increase their awareness of simple steps they can take to protect themselves from overexposure to
the sun.
